Bu yıl, 24–28 Haziran tarihleri arasında İstanbul’da Bilim Akademisi himayesinde Koç Üniversitesi tarafından düzenlenen Kuzeybatıda Yapay Öğrenme Yaz Okulu 2019 adlı lisansüstü yaz okulu başarıyla sonuçlandı. Dördüncüsü düzenlenen yaz okulunun bu seneki teması olarak sağlık bilimlerinde, robotikte ve endüstride yapay öğrenme belirlenmiştir. Çok büyük bir ilgi ile karşılanan ve toplam beş gün süren bu yaz okuluna çoğunluğunu yüksek lisans ve doktora öğrencilerinin oluşturduğu toplam 350’den fazla katılımcı 12 tane eğitmenin ve endüstriden 15 tane konuşmacının ilgili konulardaki konuşmalarını takip ettiler. Yaz okulunun son gününde ise uygulamalı kodlama eğitimleri aldılar. Yaz okulunun ilk üç gününde 60’dan fazla katılımcı kendi araştırmalarını ve tez çalışmalarını poster halinde, görüş alışverişine fırsat verecek şekilde sundular.

Prof. Öznur Özkasap from Computer Engineering Department has been awarded The Informatics Association of Türkiye, 2019, Prof. Dr. Aydın Köksal, Computer Engineering Science Prize. We congratulate Prof. Özkasap for this extremely well-deserved recognition and wishing her continued success!

2018-2019 Faculty of Engineering Senior Design Project traditional event took place with the participation of Faculty Members and Students.

Our PhD student Yasemin Vardar (thesis advised by Burak Guclu from Bogazici University and Prof. Cagatay Basdogan from Koc University) received the best PhD thesis award from EuroHaptics Society during the IEEE World Haptics Conference in Tokyo, July 9-12, 2019. Yasemin is currently a post-doctoral fellow in Max Planck Institute for Ingelligent Systems in Stuttgard. Every year the EuroHaptics Society awards a prize for the best Ph.D. thesis of the year. The EuroHaptics Society Ph.D. Award competition is open to all candidates from different continents, who in the broad sense disserted on a topic of relevance to the science and/or technology of haptics. The award winning thesis is published as a hardcover book by Springer-Verlag.

Koç University Industry Engineering student Özlem Çarıkcıoğlu finished 57th out of 81 participants in Giant Slalom in PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018. 24-years old athlete represented Türkiye in her first-ever Olympic race in alpine skiing in South Korea.
